Triton is powered by a proven 2.4L 4 cylinder turbo diesel engine that has 133kW and 430Nm. It runs through a six speed sports AT and utilises Mitsubishi’s robust Super Select 11 4WD system that allows you to select 4WD on the go. Towing is limited to 3100kg.

The GSR especially in the Orange colour is still relatively stylish outside and comfortable inside. It is due a major overhaul though as the interior is a little dated now.

However the Triton remains a true robust reliable 4WD Ute that has proven itself over many years but at $65,690 plus the usual costs, it has a few competitors that have more safety features and more modern interior.

More Triton GSR thoughts

What does the Triton GSR look like?

Triton has always gone for the slimline stylish look rather than the big yank grill style favoured by some other Utes.

The GSR in Orange colour with the black bull bar actually looks quite appealing.

Triton GSR provides a tough looking addition to the range. It includes a number of trend-driven features: 18” black alloy wheels, black dynamic shield design, grille, headlamp garnish, skid plate, door mirrors, door handles and sidesteps.

GSR is offered with a choice of three great value accessories packs that include three different tonneau covers (roll top, hard and soft) and popular features such as a black sports bar and under rail tub liners.

Triton GSR Roll Top Tonneau Pack includes:

  • Black Roll Top Tonneau Cover with Sports Bar adaptor kit
  • Black Sports Bar
  • Under Rail Tub Liner
  • Cargo Tie Down Kit
  • Front and Rear Carpet Mats
  • Tail Gate Assist
  • Tail Gate Lock

Personally I’m not a fan of roll top tonneau covers.

Wheels and tyres are 18×7.5 Alloys with 255/60 R18 road biased tyres. The black alloys look quite good, especially against the orange body.

What about inside the Triton GSR?

Inside the Triton it’s a little tight for room, courtesy of the thin design.

Front seats are comfortable. The vehicle I drove had the black interior but there is an optional tan orange interior with tan orange highlights on leather seats, orange console box and knee pads.

They are heated, leather and have electronic adjustment for the driver. Leather trim is also on the steering wheel, transmission lever, handbrake lever, door panels etc.

There is plenty of room for the front occupants, but rear is a little tight especially behind taller drivers.

Overall visibility is actually very good.

Triton GSR Infotainment and Connectivity.

The range-topping Mitsubishi Triton GSR Dual-Cab Pick-Up adopts the high-end Smartphone link Display Audio system with 7.0-inch touchscreen, six speakers, digital radio and Bluetooth connectivity with voice control and audio streaming.

It also allows wired Apple and Android smartphone connectivity, while offering the convenience of a 3-in-1 USB to Lightning Type C & Micro USB cable.

This system also features the Multi Around Monitor, which provides a 360-degree bird’s eye view of the vehicle to assist manoeuvring, and a HDMI port for additional connectivity.

However the screen is small by today’s standards and often went black without warning.

It’s fair to say the technology needs a major overhaul.

Also surprisingly, for a company that prides itself on making vehicles for the far outback and bush, to rely on phone connectivity for navigation facilities seems counter intuitive.

Triton GSR Engine and drivetrain

Triton GSR is powered by a 2.4L 4 cylinder turbo diesel. It produces power of 133kW @ 3,500rpm and torque of 430Nm @ 2,500rpm. It will bring about 75% of that torque in around 1,500rpm.

This drives a part time selectable 4WD system through a proven AISIN six speed sports automatic transmission. The Super Select 11 4WD system is proven. It allows shift on the fly changes and also when the weather is inclement, H4WD on the roads without locking the centre diff.

2022 Mitsubishi Triton GSR 4WD diff lock

Select has four modes, 2H, 4H, 4HLC, 4LLC. These handle everything from smooth city lanes to hazardous conditions and extreme terrain with minimal grip levels, all controlled with a single switch.

It also has a three mode choice between grave, mud/snow and sand.

Triton has a rear diff lock for those difficult situations as well.

Like most Utes, front brakes are ventilated disc 320 mm size and rear brakes are 11.6″ LT drum.

What is the Triton GSR like to drive?

Triton GSR is a Ute. There’s no getting away from that fact. It responds as a Ute should. While the power and torque figures are around average for Utes, more would be better. However the low torque delivery allows relaxed cruising.

On the roads, it’s not bad, but not as good as say, the SsangYong Musso or Nissan Navara.

The front Double wishbone with coil spring & stabiliser bar and rear leaf spring suspension has at its first priority load bearing and ruggedness.

On the sand it’s a breeze and dirt roads are traversed with the knowledge that underneath is a well-tested set up.

I’ve towed many times with a Triton before and even though the maximum tow limit is lower than standard for the segment it makes a good tow vehicle.

2019 Mitsubishi Triton GLS Premium 4WD 10 safety

Triton GSR final thoughts

Triton has been around for ages and has proven itself in the toughest conditions Australia can throw at it.

The GSR variant is Mitsubishis way of tapping into the growing premium Ute market before an overhaul comes.

However if I was heading deep into the outback I would have absolutely no hesitation in taking a Triton. After all I’ve taken a Pajero everywhere with no problems before.
