Ranger Super Duty VS LandCruiser 79 series Ute

What is best Ranger Super Duty or LandCruiser 79 series Ute

Super Duty VS LandCruiser Ute – For many years LandCruiser has held the prominent position for a heavy-duty work Ute. The LC79 series is legendary for its robustness.

SD vs LC79 front exterior towing and workingEnter Ford Super Duty work Ute. It will challenge the LC79 Ute in ways Toyota must be grinding their teeth over.

For this comparison we are looking at the dual cab chassis versions of both Utes.

The Toyota comes in both a dual Cab and Single Cab chassis version. The Ranger Super Duty will come in single cab, space cab and Dual Cab trayback versions as well as tub versions. It has more versatility with model range.

Details are slowly being released to the public about the Ranger Super Duty and this comparison will be updated as more information becomes available.

Remember that this is an analysis comparison only. I haven’t driven the Ranger Super Duty yet so an overall winner cant be decided yet.

SD vs LC79 front engine and transmission

Engine and Drivetrain

The Toyota LC79 series recently upgraded its popular V8 diesel to a modified version of the 2.8L 4-cylinder turbo diesel engine and added an automatic transmission. The V8 is no longer available for order. This comes with a 6-speed automatic transmission and part time 4WD. Manual transmission is an option. Selecting 4WD is old school with a transmission lever that clunks into place. I like it.

Ford has confirmed that it will use a detuned version of the 3.0L V6 Turbo diesel. This is matched to a 10-speed automatic transmission. Super Duty has full time 4WD with low range selectable from a dial.

It offers six selectable drive modes (Normal, Eco, Tow/Haul, Mud/Ruts, Sand and Rock Crawl). These modes tailor a range of vehicle settings. From throttle and transmission response to stability control to aid when driving off-road.

The Toyota combination has proven robust over many years. The Ford combination came into Ford at the latest update a few years ago but was with Volkswagen for a few years before that.

Goven that the Ford has similar power output but 20% more torque and a more sophisticated 4WD system the win goes to Ford here.

Winner – Ford Super Duty

SD vs LC79 front exterior

Exterior

The Toyota has carried its old school robust design through since it was first developed. The latest update softened the look a touch, but it still has that boxy styling that many buyers love.

Compare that to Ranger Super Duty that has more modern sleek styling. It looks more like a recreational Ute rather than a robust work Ute. Again, many people like that about it.

This one is really down to personal taste, for the looks.

However, the fact that Toyota continues to persist with the ridiculous, crappy, manual exterior mirrors means that the Ford gets the nod from me.

SD vs LC79 front interior

Interior

Hers it’s a clash of two different cultures. They might not even be in the same universe.

The Toyota has made many strides to upgrade the interior of its LC79 series Utes of late. But they are still well and truly old school. I swear the A/C controls are from the same parts bin that my HJ60 Sahara had. That was 1986. Having said that they are functional.

Other manual controls for various functions work well, so buttons and dials aren’t needed to get things done.

The small central screen, however, is about 15 years out of date. Another issue for me is no reverse camera. They can be fitted as an aftermarket item, but why not from Toyota.

I also prefer the vinyl style of seats from the workmate, than the fabric seats of the GXL. There are no soft touch points anywhere and storage is an issue.

While the Ford is a work Ute and has a more utilitarian interior than many of  its stablemates. Its still streets ahead of the Toyota.

The 10-inch vertical screen mirrors smart phones and provides crisp resolution. The whole interior is more upmarket than the Toyota. Its more coordinated and intuitive.

Dimensions – Super Duty VS LandCruiser Ute

Up until now the Toyota LandCruiser 79 series has reigned supreme in payload capacity. That ship has sailed.

The new king of payload and towing for medium sized Utes is the Ford Ranger Super Duty.

It has American Pickup truck capacities for towing, GVM and GCM and more payload than any other similar sized Ute.

You have to go to small Trucks to match it.

Winner – Ford Super Duty.

Rob first learned to drive on the farm in a left hand drive WW11 Jeep when he was 11, many years ago. He has maintained a strong interest in the industry ever since and was hooked on 4WDriving way back then.Often known for taking the Ute or 4WD in the driveway over the sports car, he has traveled pretty much everywhere in Australia and when he is bored goes for a drive. He is most at home sitting in a Ute listening to the diesel rumble and driving somewhere there are few people.
